Chapter Eighteen
Tristan
Lily stood tucked into the side of The Irish Fucker. I knew they were only friends, but there was something between them I couldn't understand. It was deep, and part of me was glad he'd been there for her, but the other part of me hated him for existing.
I wouldn't deny her the comfort I could plainly see he was providing her. He bent down and whispered in her ear, and she turned her tear stained face and smiled at him. It was the first smile I'd seen from her in days.
The day her mom passed, I waited in the doorway. I felt pulled toward her, but I didn't want to intrude. What I saw will haunt me for the rest of my life. Rose's chest lifted off the bed. Her eyes opened wide and she fought for the few last breaths she took. There was no peaceful death for one of the kindest women I'd ever met, and it pissed me off.
Lily sat on her mom's bed. Her hands moved without comfort, and yet she tried to be there for her mother, even though watching her struggle in that way was torture on them both. In the end, my girl showed a strength I hadn't realized she possessed.
He did, though. I could see it in the way he looked at her, like he knew exactly who she was. There was peace and openness between them, almost like, well, like family.
"She's like a sister to him. You realize that right?"
I looked over and realized Dee sneaked up next to me. "I am trying not to go over there and rip his arm off her."
She rolled her eyes at me. "You and Adam were so much alike. I can still feel him when you're around. Like the memories are alive when all of us are together. You don't need to worry about Declan. Adam loved him, too. They were like brothers after you left."
Ouch. That stung in ways I was unable to verbalize. I didn't think Dee realized Adam and I started to reconnect right before he died. I'd tell her all about it someday. Still, it wasn't enough. I'd lost years with all of them, and here was the guy who stepped into my shoes. At least he didn't take my place in Lily's bed.
No, someone else did that. I couldn't blame her for trying to move on. As glad as I am she left him, I would have rather been alone and miserable than to have her ever hurt a day in her life. Especially at the hands of someone who was supposed to love her.
He might not have physically abused her, but there are other ways to hurt someone. Words can cut, and given enough time someone can tear another person apart with nothing more than the tongue. My Lily was strong, but that kind of strength grew from trials. My sweet angel had seen too much in her twenty-eight years.
Today added another brick in her defenses. She stood tall, straight, and ready to face this tragedy.
